Overview

This class will explore the ins and outs of data management plans and cruise reports. We will go over the necessary components, show a range of styles, and provide the opportunity for you to start scaffolding your Data Management Plan (DMP) / Cruise Report outline for your Dream Cruise.

Goals

  • Learn about data management plan (DMP) goals, components, and formats for metadata, digital data, sample data, and engineering plans. Describe data storage challenges and strategies.

  • Create a data management plan for your Dream Cruise proposal

  • Learn about goals for cruise reports, components, and formats

  • Create a cruise report outline for your Dream Cruise

  • Revise your data management plan for your Dream Cruise with your cruise report goals in mind

Pre-Class Activities

  • Register for the DMP Tool

  • Read the Data Management Plan, Earth and Environmental Systems Institute, Pennsylvania State University

  • Browse the Ocean DMPs provided as Additional Resources below and published here

  • Review the Data Management Plan outline in the Dream Project Overview Template for this week’s Class Activity

  • Watch this video that Andy recorded with a 15-minute overview of how to organize folders and files to help manage files, before, during and after an expedition. We can discuss/answer questions as might be helpful in class.

  • 14:05 (55 min): Data Management

    • Intro to a Data Management Plan, Andy (20 min)

      • What is it, why do you need it, what information should be included?  

    • Breakouts (15 min)

    • Continue Discussion about Data (20 min)

      • Data storage options and accessibility options, Randi

      • Organizing files and file naming, Andy (see pre-class video)

      • Innovation & Engineering, Randi

        • Version control

        • CAD files or other files

        • Digital lab notebooks

        • Date-stamped art for anything you might patent

      • Organizing samples and sample naming, Randi

        • Date format

        • Spreadsheets

        • Abbreviations for preservation

  • 15:00 (5 min): Break

  • 15:05 (50 min): Cruise Reports

    • Overview of Different Types of Cruise Reports, Randi (15 min)

      • 30-day post-cruise vs Final report

      • Slack channels - one per dive 

      • Dive plans, dive vehicle report, dive summary report, dive sample report 

      • Outreach report 

      • Shallow water report vs Deep water report

      • Old school cruise reports - useful summary and directory to expedition  

    • Breakout Activity (same breakout groups) (25 min)

      • Now that you have seen what needs to be produced at the end, re-visit your data management plan

      • What do you need to revise? Add? Delete? Think through?

    • Return and Discuss (10 min)

  • 15:55 (5 min): Wrap-up and Prep for Next Class
